Methanol is a building block chemical; it is one of the widely used industrial chemicals in the world.
From paints and plastics, furniture and carpeting, car parts and windshield wash fluid, methanol is used in making hundreds of products that touch our daily lives. Methanol is also an emerging energy fuel for running our cars, trucks, buses, and even electric power turbines.
Methanol is a light, colorless, flammable liquid at room temperature, and contains less carbon and more hydrogen than any other liquid fuel. It is a stable biodegradable chemical. Methanol occurs naturally in the environment, and quickly breaks down in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
Methanol is vastly used in everyday life from paint and plastics to furniture, carpeting and cars. The largest user of methanol is the chemical industry. Methanol emerging as an energy fuel for running cars, trucks, buses, etc. Chemicals made from methanol are:
• Formaldehyde – Glues, resins and polymers
• Acetic acid - Acetates - VAM
